• 4.0 out of 5 stars from MelodyTregear -- Very good : The chapters are very short so you feel as though you are moving at a rapid pace, but the story actually starts slow and the mystery unravels little by little. Plenty of secrets and even some curve balls to distract your attention, but ultimately the author answers all the necessary questions. There are some creepy moments and some nice slow-burn romance too. I must say, I did not suspect the guilty party at all! One question: what happened to the detonator he was holding when he moved everyone to Hanging Hill? No biggy. It does not detract from the story. Just curious. Definitely recommend this book. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Babs -- Not Fog Lake : Maybe it’s because I came into this series expecting something on the level of her Fog Lake series, but this book feel flat for me. It didn’t have the spiritual depth, eeriness or even whit and repartée Christy Barritt is known for. I would have taken just one of those with glee! He ability to truly capture the essence of an area and make you truly care about the side characters (even when they are deeply flawed) was also missing. I so look forward to her books that this may simply be a case of too high an expectation during what is turning out to be everyone’s mid-COVID slump. Throw in a mysterious, missing trunk, hidden identities and long-lost bodies, a hanging tree, the return to the scene of child trauma, and you have another winner! A heroine trying to face her past (and remember a missing part of it). A friend from the past returns. An entire town with secrets. What's not to like? Better than the first book in the series.
