It should have been called Witchcraft or Wizardry. Once you get past the fact that there will be no discussion of traditional magic, it just read as a dry and dull. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from BooksArePortableMagic -- If You Want This For Modern Magical History Search Elsewhere : As a practitioner of modern paganism and witchcraft, I'm always excited to read a book about how the Craft evolved from early practitioners of magic. This book does just that, explaining how early civilizations viewed and practiced magic. It's a comprehensive book for early eras of magic from an archeologist. Unfortunately, modern magic is given only a few chapters and is honestly pretty vague and often inaccurate. While Gosden shows a deep understanding of magic in ancient and medieval cultures, he completely lacks an understanding of what it means in modern culture. The Golden Dawn and Wicca, the two most influential traditions of magic in modern history, are given only a few paragraphs. Gosden seems to almost pick out names from a bad Wikipedia article. We hear about Aleister Crowley and Gerald Gardner but not about other important people that shaped our modern history such as Eliphas Levi, Madame Blavatsky, Scott Cunningham, Z. Budapest or Starhawk. In one section, he even begins discussing Freud, giving him credit in the movement when Freud actually has little to no influence on modern magic. He discusses Freud's interest in spiritualism but for some reason completely ignores Freud's protege Carl Jung who dedicated much of his life to studying the occult and alchemy! Jung has had a huge influence in modern magic but is completely ignored! Overall this book is great for understanding the ancient to medieval history of magic, but it's clear the author did very little research into the modern history of magic. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kate -- Interesting but not what I expected : This book covers everything from Ancient Mesopotamian magic to modern and future magic. This gives readers a broad overview of magic over time and throughout the world. This book is full of fascinating tidbits about magical beliefs, practices, and religion. However, there is a lot of info in this book and sometimes it felt overwhelming and so I had to read in small doses. The writing style also felt a little dry at times. For example sometimes we got a lot of archeological evidence laid out followed by speculation, which wasn't what I was expecting. So while there was a lot of fascinating history surrounding magic, it felt like I had to cut through some fat to get to it while other areas didn't go as deep as I expected into the magical history and knowledge. Although a sizeable book, its scope necessitates that centuries and cultures are sketched briefly. But even in areas where I am knowledgeable and am aware of what has been omitted, I cannot argue with the authors editorial choices. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Avid reader -- An incantation without a spell : Unfortunately, the author is an academic, not a sorcerer, a writer, or even a philosopher. And so the book comes across as a bit of a thought-disordered catalogue, albeit an extensive one, without much flair, insight, or analysis. This book has no idea what it is trying to say, or why, or how. Houston -- Interesting book, if as much about anthropology and archaeology as magic. : The book explores magical practices in different parts of the world going back to the last Ice Age. My main criticism of the book would be the author's excessive relativism when it comes to comparisons between magical practices and modern science, which he is keen to present as having commensurate logical and rational validity.
